Fair-Weather Fans

In 1990, Johnny Gill sang a song named "Fair-weather Buddy".  For those of you that do not bear in mind that song, the chorus went like this:

I will not be no fair-weather friend

I'll be there 'till the end

Even via stormy weather

Time and time once again

Is there something worse in sports than a Fair-weather fan?  Being a fair-weather fan is like betting your friend on a game, and saying your little brother is going to pay the debt if you shed.  Or like picking the Superbowl winner...soon after the Superbowl.  You have nothing vested.  Fair-weather fans are ruining sports.  It was simple to root for the Lakers or Celtics in the '80s, the Bulls in the '90s or the Patriots as soon as Drew Bledsoe lost his job to Tom Brady.  It is effortless.  It is simple to root for Tar Heels basketball or even Red Wings hockey, but to pick a team and stick with them by means of the stormy weather is the sign of a accurate fan.

In no other aspect of life is it "ok" to be fair-weather.  If you knew you had a friend that would run every time trouble arose in your life, you wouldn't be buddies with that individual.  Now that my Lakers are struggling in these playoffs, I have Cleveland Caviler fans giving me grief.  Seriously, Cavs fans?  I didn't know Cavs fans existed.  I thought they had been a myth like the Yeti.  99% of these "Cavs" didn't even know the Cavs existed 10 years ago, and the 3 people who did thought they were the Calves and couldn't realize why the team was named after a baby cow.   These are the similar people today that couldn't name 5 individuals on the team not named LeBron, Mo or Massive Z.

I understand everybody wants to root for a winner.  I get that.  The factor that irks me is when a fair-weather fan gives a true fan grief about their team.  The reason becoming is this fair-weather fans do not know how much it hurts a accurate fan when their team loses.  If the Cavs get beat in the playoffs, the fair-weather fan will be disappointed for a few minutes, then move on.  Whereas a accurate fans team loses and their day is fairly a great deal ruined.

They have etiquette in sports on the court, now fans want to have the exact same off of it.  It's ok if you want to be a fair-weather fan, but you have no perfect give someone else a tough time about their team.  There are some that became Cavs fans when LeBron was drafted, that is cool. I fully grasp others like the Cavs now since they're winning.  Fine.  I comprehend that consumers are drawn to a team by winning, but I hope all of these Cavs fans stick with their team when 23 has a new residence in Madison Square Garden.  Hopefully then we'll see if they can stand the rain.
